Resumen

This paper looks into the relation between alive voice and writing in ancient letters. The focus of the research is not concentrated on the content of messages but in its dictate conditions, reading aloud, opening and closing formulas. This paper covers a wide historical period; this can be explained because ancient letters were largely conservative. Between the voice and writing, letters were a sign of the persistence of rhetoric, memory and progressive acceptance of the visual message as a predominant mean of communication.
