Abstract

Geographic thought has a millenary history among the first peoples from Mexico expressed in various artistic creations in the long tradition of graphic, pictographic, aural, visual, and toponymic representation of the territory. All of these are narratives rooted in the land, reflecting the indissoluble society-nature relations among the indigenous peoples that articulate in multiple forms and meaning of time and space.
The symbols, techniques, and methods of the inscription in the materials analyzed demonstrate the complex development of social relations present in the different modes of production that exist to this day. The meanings and metaphors of historical or contemporary records are presented in Mesoamerican code or in original codes and languages from the thought and philosophy of the peoples that result from the juxtaposed ethos of power-resistance relationships in differentiated ways, which intertwine with the evolution of the so-called maize civilization all the way to the political-cultural complex of current transitional societies.
This paper focuses on understanding the process of space-thinking from a critical perspective considering the old and new forms of territoriality and the reconfiguration of the nations facing capitalism and political strategies. The former defines the transformation of cultural practices over the territory in contexts of conflict and the exercise of sovereignty and self-determination of first peoples in a world of intense social movements and changes in local, regional and global political structure with porous, mobile, permeable, symbolic centers and borders that provide material elements to the international
division of labor on strategic territories. The paper concludes with the depictions of space that arise not only from the State, the monarchy, or the entrepreneurs, but also from the first peoples themselves.
