Abstract

Susan Hill is one of the most popular writers of English gothic literature since the eighties. Her best known work is The Woman in Black (1983), which has been successfully adapted to both the stage and filmic spheres, in varied periods as well as international contexts. The aim of this article is to offer a reading of the above
mentioned novel from the perspective of Gaston Bachelard’s theory on “the imagination of matter”, in particular, his dissertations on a poetics of water.
