Abstract

Blake studies have always fostered a wide range of interpretations. Due to the various topics handled by Blake, the scholar has the possibility of resorting to the most conventional ways of literary criticism, but also to the discipline of religious studies. Both perspectives can complement each other and demand still more insight. This paper hints at a novel methodological approach that takes Blakean work as both a literary and a religious phenomenon. I especially suggest that such model can strongly rely on tantric terminology and ideology, for both Blake and tantra share in various motifs: from religious exegesis and an emphasis on creative forces, to the enactment of mythic types and a voluptuous imagery.
After outlining a typological description of Blake’s works, the paper seeks to lay down the foundations of the proposed methodology.
