Abstract

The novel Volkswagen Blues by the quebecois writer Jacques Poulin is about a trip from Gaspé Bay, at the east end of Quebec, to San Francisco Bay, in the United States. The quest of this trip is finding the whereabouts of Theo, the brother of the narrator, Jack. The beginning in the museum de la Gaspésie is as fortuitous as the next stages which are defined according to the unforeseen clues
that Jack discovers in Theo’s passage through Canadian and American soil. The places visited are related to some passages of the history of an important Quebecois
migration throughout the XIX and XXth centuries, in such a way that the trip turns out to be a reconstruction of identity, prompted by the unsuspected traces left by their ancestors.
