Pequeños mundos de ingenio y arte: traducción y comentario de seis sonetos religiosos de John Donne

Abstract

This article offers a Spanish translation of six of the Holy Sonnets by John Donne and a commentary that takes the difficulties of translating this sonnet sequence as a starting point to analyze the most important aspects of the poems in terms of rhetoric and argumentation. This translation focuses on adapting rhyme, metrics and line distribution into Spanish with the purpose of highlighting versification in
the original. No less important for the translation are the discordant semantic fields intertwined through imagery in the sonnets. The commentary deals with the recurrent
themes and images that unify the sequence; it is also an approach to the many shades in the tone of the poetic voice and its relationship with divinity. The influence of Ignatian meditation, biblical passages, and the historical and religious
context on Donne is also foregrounded both in the translation and the commentary.
