Abstract

The definition of Beauty as a whole constituted of parts appears in Greece in the Classical period. Even though the concept is in Aristotle defined as symmetria, it has a longer development that is not considered by Philosophy historians and that is of vital importance for the history of Aesthetics. I propose that the development of the idea of Beauty as symmetria begins in the work of Polykleitos of Argos, and then is in time repeated again and again confusing the sense of the concept. That is why it is necessary to ask about the differences in the symmetria definitions after the Classical period and the way in which they relate to the artistic practice and the theoretical thinking.
