Abstract

Nobel Prize in Literature in 1998, man of Letters, prolific author, controversial character and, to many, an authoritative voice about current topics, the Portuguese
writer José Saramago was often misunderstood by men of his time and of his country. Divided between his love for his country and resentment to its institutional powers, the Portuguese Nobel Prize was “forced” to live in the only
country that shares borders with Portugal, the eternal enemy and threaten to its sovereignty and independence.
This article aims to raise awareness of the relationship of the greatest contemporary Portuguese ambassador with the country where he was born and explores some of the reasons that made Saramago choose the “exile”.
